Got a Mazda 323 that breaking up @ 3k rpm on a dead rev, falls on its face with brake stall test. Customer said car ran great till timing belt & water pump change. I suspected the CKP was out of alignment but on checking the ignition system with uscope found a coil firing lean. I added throttle cleaner through a vacuum line but it made no difference. It turned out it was leaking and firing outside of the cylinder, lovely blue spark across the rocker cover.
Checked ckp signal but it looked good so I thought it's the coil. Slapped a new coil but problem remained. I decided to loosen the ckp sensor and move it slightly away. Started the car and problem went away. My initial thoughts were correct but after seeing the coil leaking (in a waste spark system) I wanted to fix that first before moving on.
