for a msd 6a/6al or any other capacitive discharge ignition, is it possible to capture a primary ignition waveform or is it just the secondary that is possible.
Yes if you scratch around on the web there are a couple of pages with primary capacitive wave forms the only problem with connecting straight to the primary is the voltage, some scopes would be fine with a 20:1 attenuator but high voltage 100:1 and even 1000:1 probes are available fairly cheaply. However you would need to first establish what a good waveform looks like. The same goes for primary current you would need to capture a known good to spot a bad one.
The secondary is easier to deal with a normal spark line even a multiple spark line voltage is going to be determinded by the plug gap, mixure, compression, throttle openning the same as any other spark line.
