Ultrasonic leak detector :-) was created by Andy.MacFadyen
I bought a cheap ultrasonic leak detector to trace water leaks I am not 100% sure how good it will be for that kind of fault but I tried it on a couple of simulated manifold vacuum leaks and I am most impressed with the results.

The pack contains two units the first is is a receiver unit that has a microphone sensitive to ultrasonic sound and electronics that convert the ultrasonic sound into sound you can hear through headphones. With pressure leaks including vacuum leaks the rushing gas usually produces an ultrasonic whistle that humans cannot hear but if you use the ultrasonic detector you can hear the leak via the headphones and track it down by searching with the microphone.

For looking for a leak in say a tailgate rubber seal you also use the other unit which is an ultrasonic sounder inside the trunk close the tailgate down and with the reciever search around the tailgate seal and and other likely ares where rain could leak in.

I have used these ultra sonic leak detectors in very noisy power plants to find small air leaks - they are perfect for all kinds of leak detection

What tool do you use to fix an ultrasonic leak? Any Dr. Who fans out there? :)

I've heard this type of tester is needed on newer EVAP systems during leak testing, as smoke is too difficult to see with extremely small leaks. B)

That seems like a pretty handy tool Andy. I need to talk to our service manager to buy one ;)

I knew they worked but waited until I saw one at a bargain basement price. It surprise d me how well it worked on a vacuum leak.

I discovered it also picks up ultrasonic reversing sensors.
