Fuel Injector Cleaneing

Hello. I"m considering getting the OTC injector cleaner to service my injectors. I can disable the fuel pump by opening the inertia switch. My system is a mechanical return less type so I wanted to know is the procedure any different than a system with a return line. I've seen videos on Youtube but with return line systems. Thanks.

I've never used the OTC cleaner, but I figure you're referring to this one?

If I'm reading the manual correctly, I think they just want you to disconnect the pressure line from the rail, and connect the canister in its place. With the pump disabled, you can let the disconnected pressure hose hang out during the service. Dial the pressure up to whatever spec is and let it go!

I haven't used the otc ,but I have the motorvac fuel cleaning machine and it's easier on the returnless system , I usually just pull the fuse to the fuel pump so the scanner doesn't time out during cleaning and pump fuel everywhere! (It takes about 30 mins to complete)

Oh, you kill the pump? I just deadhead it. Always how I've been told to do it, maybe I'm an ape.

On return systems I don't kill the pump I look it back through the fuel return but I always kill the pump on returnless systems

Definitely agree on the return systems. I think that's outlined in the machine manual, IIRC.

But in all seriousness, am I wrong to rely on the regulator in the tank on returnless systems? Maybe 'deadhead' wasn't the right choice of words. I just block the pressure hose and let the regulator in the pump do its job.

For returnless systems with a regulator in the tank I don't see any reason why you couldn't block the fuel line, but for returnless vehicles with Pwm fuel pumps that would probably be a near horrible death for them!

I spoke to the tech support rep from OTC and he says as long as the inertia fuel switch is open which doesn't allow the FP to run, I should be ok with cleaning the injectors. Since I have a schrader valve on the fuel rail there is no need to block or tap into.

I agree with inertia switch being a suitable way to disable fuel pump
