With big heavy loads such as alternators, starters and suspension air compressors the test load for voltage drops has to draw close to the actual working amperage. This applies especially to starters and alternators where the terminals of the cables can be the sources of high resistance. The best test load for a starter cable is the a cold start, for an alternator if you don't have a carbon pile tester put every electrical load on the car on.

With starters and alternators a high resistance connection will usual very rapidly become hot to the touch.

I'm not sure that you could connect it in the same way as a DVOM and get the same results. You could theoretically use the voltage reading feature on the B+ and solenoid circuits, as long as the reading doesn't disappear from the display below a certain voltage.

It's possible? But it definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

Yeah i agree i prefer to use dvom for volt drops .Just got hold of a power probe 3 with gold kit and extra extension. Is there a way to use any of the extension leads with a dvom as one side of the lead is keyed so will not fit into a dvom (be handy if it could )?

I use the gold series leads with my scope and meter all the time!
I really like the little yellow fuse blade attachments

Is there a way to use the 20ft spare extension lead that i got with my kit to hook up to my dvom ? can use the probes and other leads as they are standard but the extension lead is keyed?

It's possible, you have to be a little creative.

The yellow and black is the one that came with my Verus, and the other two are out of the Lisle Relay test kit. They were just the first two I found that fit in there from my bag-o-test leads.

You could probably custom order leads from AESwave.com that are male\male or female\female or any configuration & length.
