As my own car is now common rail diesel I thought I better get up to speed on them and found a website with a good training slide show by Tony Kitchen of AK Training giving a concise briefing on the Common Rail system Link to Slide Show

I did some captures interesting this is the injector amps waveform at idle --- not sure what the features are yet but it is good to ave a known good

Under hood intermediate pressure electric fuel pump amps.

Hey Andy that's a weird looking injector current for sure ! Whats the deal on the pump I see it seems to be every 4th is lower current is this a dying pump or a release in load? I thought pumps were usually 8 segments per revolution?

What I think is happening with the fuel pump is it feeds into a 3 lobe mechanical pump and the variation is due to the intake strokes of the pump, I am going to try to confirm that either by getting a waveform from the net or jumping the pump relay to run it engine off.

I found a couple of pages on the web that explain complex injector current pattern, the injector opens twice, the first is the pre or pilot injection the second is the main injection. In addition some common rail engines use a post injection pulse to clean up the emisions .

that makes me want to take a look at my vw diesel injector current and see what it looks like. The injection pump sure makes sense on that pump current.

I will need to run a test on the pump with the engine off to be 100% sure on the pump wave form if I get time at the weekend I will. Pico's Frank Massey has an interesting simple testing method the common rail pressure sensor output voltage I will also give that a go.

Comon rail pressure sensor test, following Frank Massey of Pico's method --- although I only max RPM for a second or so. A good simple test.

Hi Andy,i,ve been taking what i call a quite a few standard fuel pressure pattern or profile for quite a few years, the interesting thing is the high pressure profile(pattern)for a high pressure petrol as in the ecoboost engine is the same as a common rail diesel,
best wishes from Mid Wales
Peter(good luck tomorrow against the Austrailians)

We're primarily a diesel shop. If there's any thing you may be interested in I likely have captures or can get it rather quickly!

the attached file is from a 2.5LDV van with the Fiat based engine,it has a faulty rail pressure sensor.
