Appropriate amp clamp for ignition system troubleshooting was created by josegumby
Hi,
I have a (hopefully) simple question. I have a Honda Element that feels like it has a little bit of a misfire under moderate load ("shudder" under moderate acceleration). I would like to use an amp clamp on the fuse circuit ( Fuse Buddy Mini Current Loop ) for the ignition system to see if I can narrow down the problem to a specific ignition coil (to avoid blindly replacing coils, of course). I already have a 4-channel picoscope, and I am looking at the following two amp clamps:
PICO TA018 amp clamp ($159.00)
PICO TA189 amp clamp ($459.00)
Will the (far cheaper) TA018 60-amp amp clamp work for me to be able to clearly see the ignition system waveforms, or am I going to need the far more expensive one?
I need to revisit the scanner-danner premium youtube pages to refresh myself, but I think having an amp clamp in my arsenal would really be nice. I just want to make sure I have the right one for what I need to accomplish at the moment.
Thanks,
Curt

The peak current on a coil is normally no more than 10 amps so the low range clamp is all that is required, however you don't need to go for an official Pico all you need is a generic one and BNC to Bannana adaptors and you can save money or see the tools section on this forum.

If you want a BNC connector clamp Hantek do a budget one, just make sure you buy from a seller with a good returns policy in case it arrives DOA.

I have the PICO TA018 amp clamp ($159.00) and it works great. You don't need that expensive precision clamp.
