Verus Edge - Cannot acquire ripple signal from scope was created by Mechanic 350
I have my 2008 honda civic 1.8 liter civic. My alternator gave up the ghost. So I'm trying to get a ripple waveform as I was taught in the book. Yellow to main bat + terminal and black to B+ or ground. And for the life of me, I can't get a signal on my scope. I checked my scope connections and they're correct. Why can I get a signal? This is one of the reason why I don't like using scope because we do-it-yourselfers don't have someone on our side guiding us. Just venting. Plus I used the 20 amp low amp probe, and the same thing happened. I can't get a signal. Everything reads 0 zero.

20v scale I think is the issue here. Bring that voltage WAY down.
Personally, I set the voltage to 1v or .5v, then the key is to turn on AC coupling. This will "filter out" the nominal charging system voltage and display just the changes in voltage. Then I adjust my time until I can see all the humps I want to see on my screen.
If possible, check directly on the B+ lug of the alternator as the battery can absorb some.of the ripple you are trying to measure. If it's in a hard spot, it's not mission critical

Just remember, there's more than one way for an alternator to fail. Even if it has stopped charging, that doesn't mean a diode has failed (which is what gives excessive AC ripple). The few times I have seen failed diodes , or issues with excessive AC current, the alternator still was charging the battery, it sounded like a cat in heat when revved up and there was interference in other electronics. For example, Chrysler alternators used to suffer failed diodes and the ripple would effect the vehicle speed sensor signal. The speedometer would show 20mph stationary and the transmission wouldn't upshift.
EDIT: I am just re-reading your original post. Maybe a typo, but make sure the black lead is on B-
All of our scope testing is done referenced to ground, there will never be a reason to put the negative lead on B+.
