ASE Test question

After charging a vehicles battery a Technician notices the electric cooling fan runs constantly. What is the most likely cause.
A: A short to ground at point A
B: A short to power at point B

A short to ground a point A is definitely possible, but why would it happen after changing the battery?
A short to power at point B would also cause the fan to run constantly, but why would that be any more likely than answer A?
Where's answer C? Where the BCM got 'logic locked' by the low battery voltage? That's WAY more likely than A or B, IMO.

It was after charging the battery

I can't remember off the top of my head exactly what the other 2 choices were but they could be eliminated easily. (opens) All the choices had to do with reading the wiring diagram.

Noah wrote: I'm saying A. My reasoning being the battery was discharged because the fan was running continuously. Presumably with the key off, that takes the BCM out of the picture for me.
I agree with Noah unless the BCM has an after run program designed into the fan

Sorry Noah, I no longer agree
They are both good answers, not sure how you would pick the best one.

Ahhh yes, good point.ScannerDanner wrote: Never mind. A short to power at point B is after the BCM so it doesn't matter what the BCM is doing.

I suppose it comes down to the internal construction of the fan module. More specifically, the transistor. You would think it's ground is constant, considering the module has constant power and ground.

Ro-longo wrote: When I took the test I chose option A after flip flopping on the answer. I was trying to figure out the "most likely" option. I think I stared at this question for about 5 minutes. I guess I will never know what the answer ASE was looking for, since ASE doesn't let you know what the correct answers are.

Something tells me this one was one of those 'experimental' questions that aren't graded. Truly frustrating, not knowing the correct answer

This was a recertification test, I didn't know they had those for that type. All of them were scored.

Second, does this even happen? If so how do you fix it?

However I can think of other reasons why the fan should run continuosly.

That's what I'm thinking. Congrats on getting 100%, though!

That's really good. I only took the electrical and the engine performance tests and got 100% on each. That's another reason (excuse) I've been putting off the L1. Set the bar too high :sick:bruce.oliver wrote: Thanks. I missed 2 each on suspension and brakes then missed 3 on engine performance
