So last year I bought a 1997 buick lesabre custom with about 76,000 miles. Drove it home, about 500 miles no problem, I had the freon filled because it was low. Shorty afterwards, it starting cutting off. So I had the alternator changed, drove it for a couple miles and stopped at o reilly s for a couple minutes. Came outside and it was cranking but it wouldn't start. We changed the fuel pump and still couldn't get it to start. I literally left the car there for about a week out of frustration. I came back and it started right up. An electronic mechanic told me it was the alternator harness . So he rewired it to stay on but the problem persist. This happens when the car is at operating temp. Also I live in south texas so during the high heat/summer is when the problem starts. It runs good when I'm on the highway ,but when Im driving in the city/stop and go or idling at heavy traffic red lights it will turn off. Please help, running out options. I bought this car thinking this motor the 3800's were fairly simple to fix but I was mistaken.

My first thought is a dirty throttle-body. If it gets too dirty, it will not allow enough air past the throttle plate, at idle.

i had one do this a couple weeks ago, it ended up being the crank sensor. Intermittently wouldnt crank after getting hot, let it cool off and it would crank again.  i had to use a labscope to verify i wasnt getting one of the 2 crank signals to the Ignition Control Module. Replaced the crank sensor and it was fixed.

Hey , I cleaned the throttle body it was caked up with carbon, but I managed to get it all off. After wards I had suction when I took off the oil cap. A friend suggested changing the pvc valve and i noticed it didn't have the spring inside. After changing it and putting the spring in it the suction went away but the idling issue continues when I'm parked. If I turn off the a/c of the recirculation button it stops. Any suggestions?

what size engine does it have? 3.4, 3.8 etc?

Some questions are to rule out possible internal compressor failure causing a/c compressor to lock up and stall vehicle considering this happened after recharging a/c system.....

Does it start at operating temp with a/c off?
What codes if any are setting?
What idling issue are you having with the a/c on? idles up or down etc?? possible failing Idle air control valve or egr valve if equipped
Have you had the a/c professionally serviced or just topped off yourself?
What are the system pressures?
1. rest pressure readings with a/c off high and low side and ambient air temp reading preferably cold engine or a/c not running the last 30 minutes before taking this reading?

2. running pressure both low side and high side readings with ambient air temp and engine temp?

3. operating pressures when no start / stall happens with ambient air temp and engine temp?

Also take the spring out of the pcv valve. lets not create additional problems to this issue.
