I haven't seen the type of book you are looking for in a while I would guess because most colleges have their own material on-line for this kind of subject . What I would suggest is if you spot a car manufacturers shop manual from before the mid-1960's grab it because these usually went into great detail on the operation of for example the cooling and lubrication system operation the actual valve timing diagrams and overhaul procedures for operations such as fitting new piston rings. They also covered manual gearboxes and rear axles in great detail. Auto transmissions are a more difficult as these days there are so many completely different designs, gone are the days of the simple & tough 3 speed planetary like the BW35.

I will have a scout around the web to see if I can find anything that might be of value.

Freeasestudyguides.com is pretty good. Do the sample tests and when you submit your answer you'll have a chance to read more on the topic.
