This is a common problem on Ford systems that use this style of camshaft sensor. In particular the 3.0 and 3.8L engines. The internal bushings of the cam synchronizer housing will wear out and case the shaft to wobble which will damage the camshaft position sensor. Complete replacement of both the synchronizer housing and camshaft position sensor is needed when this happens. Setting the timing for these things can be tricky without the Ford specific tool but they can also be set with a scope. In this video I will show you how to troubleshoot these systems as well as how to set the cam synchronizer timing.

symptoms 50

  • severe hesitation at high RPM and heavy load
  • possible check engine light with cam sensor codes
  • misfire
  • intermittent loss of power under load

fix 50

  • replace cam sensor and synchronizer assembly

  • how to use the O2 at wide open throttle to determine the cause of a low power complaint
  • how to view a graphed pulse width of a fuel injector on a scope
  • fuel injector voltage waveform on a scope
  • when to view injector duty cycle and why it is an advantage over monitoring pulse width in some scenarios
  • duty cycle vs pulse width scales (which one should you use)
